Understanding BC Window Tinting Laws: What You Need to Know

Understanding BC Window Tinting Laws: What You Need to Know

Navigating Window Tinting Laws in British Columbia

Before you book your window tinting appointment, it's crucial to understand the local laws in British Columbia to ensure your vehicle remains street-legal and you avoid unnecessary fines or inspection notices.

    The Rules for Front Windows

In British Columbia, the law is very strict regarding the front driver and passenger side windows. It is illegal to apply any aftermarket window tint to the front side windows. The glass must remain exactly as it came from the factory to ensure maximum visibility for the driver and allow law enforcement to see inside the vehicle.

    Windshield Regulations

Similar to the front side windows, you cannot tint the entire front windshield. However, you are allowed to have a strip of tint across the very top of the windshield (often called a sun strip or visor strip), provided it does not extend more than 7.5 cm (about 3 inches) below the top of the windshield.

    Rear Windows and Back Glass

Good news! BC laws are much more lenient when it comes to the rear half of your vehicle. You can apply any darkness of tint (from light 70% to limo-dark 5%) to the rear side windows and the rear windshield, provided your vehicle is equipped with dual exterior rearview mirrors.

    Why Comply?

Failing to comply with BC's window tint laws can result in traffic violation tickets and orders to remove the film. At Coastline Tints, we always educate our customers on these regulations so you can make an informed decision.
